Kashmir · The short version
Gurez sits beyond Razdan Pass, close to the Line of Control, and until recently hardly anyone outside Kashmir had heard of it. That is changing, but slowly. It remains one of the quietest places you can visit in the valley.
You come here for wide mountain landscapes, wooden villages, the turquoise Kishanganga River and a feeling that tourism has not yet arrived in force. If Gulmarg is polished and Pahalgam is popular, Gurez is what Kashmir looked like before either became famous.

The places worth the drive.
Kishanganga River
A fast mountain river running the length of the valley. Stop often — every bend in the road looks different, and many are worth photographing.
Dawar Village
The largest settlement in Gurez, with traditional wooden homes, friendly locals and small guesthouses. Most travellers spend the night here.
Razdan Pass
The journey itself is one of the highlights. At over 3,500 metres, Razdan Pass offers sweeping views before the road drops dramatically into Gurez.
When to go
Twelve months, honestly labelled.
Visit between late May and early October. Heavy snowfall closes Razdan Pass for much of winter, making road access impossible.

- Is Gurez safe to visit?
- Yes. Although it lies close to the Line of Control, tourism is permitted and the valley is considered safe. Carry valid government ID as security checks are common.
- Can I visit throughout the year?
- No. Razdan Pass closes after heavy snowfall, usually from November until late April or early May. Always check road conditions before travelling.
- How many nights should I stay?
- One night is the minimum. Two nights let you explore the valley at a relaxed pace without spending most of your trip on the road.
