Kashmir · The short version

Doodhpathri is the one place on this list that most itineraries leave out, which is exactly why we keep putting it in. An hour and a half from Srinagar, it is a wide bowl of grass meadow with a shallow stream running through the middle of it and almost no infrastructure.

There is no gondola, no market and very little to buy. You walk, you sit by the water, and you leave. On a Sunday it fills with Srinagar families and on a weekday you may have it close to yourself.

What to see

The places worth the drive.

Sheep and horses grazing on wide green pasture with wooden shepherd huts

The meadows

Miles of open grass with shepherd huts and grazing flocks. The walking is easy and you can go as far as you like.

A shallow clear stream running over stones through bright green grass

The Shaliganga stream

Shallow and cold enough to give the place its name — the water runs white over the stones. Families spend the whole day beside it.

Green meadows below dark pine covered ridges

The pine ridges

Walk up towards the treeline for the view back down the bowl. Half an hour up, and hardly anyone bothers.

When to go

Twelve months, honestly labelled.

May to September. The road is usually snowbound from December to March, and there is nothing open up there in any case.

Do very little

There is no attraction to queue for here. Take lunch, walk, and treat it as the rest day in the middle of a busy itinerary.

Pony rides

Available and cheap, though everything worth seeing is within walking distance.

Photography

Early morning, before the day trippers arrive, is when the mist is still sitting on the grass.

Things people ask us
about Doodhpathri.

Is it worth a day?
If you want a quiet walk and a river, yes. If you want sights to tick off, no — Doodhpathri is deliberately empty and that is the whole point of it.
Can we go on a weekend?
You can, but it's the day Srinagar families drive out. Go midweek if you want the meadow to yourself.

The journey of a thousand miles begins here.

Or, more precisely, 434 kilometres of it — Srinagar to Leh, over the pass that decides whether the road is open at all.
