The plan

The complete valley. Sonamarg and the Thajiwas glacier, two nights in Pahalgam for the side valleys, and a night up in Gulmarg so you ride the Gondola before anyone else is awake.

It opens with the floating vegetable market at five in the morning, which is the one thing in Srinagar you cannot do on a day trip.

Arrive Srinagar

Met at the airport and driven to the Boulevard — about thirty minutes. The rest of the day is deliberately empty: a shikara out onto Dal Lake at sunset, and nothing else scheduled.

Dal Lake at first light

An early start for the floating vegetable market, which trades from boats between five and seven in the morning and is gone by breakfast. Back for a late one, then the gardens in the afternoon.

Day trip to Sonamarg

The Sind valley the whole way up to the meadow of gold, then the walk or pony ride to the Thajiwas glacier. Rafting on the Sind is optional and worth it between May and September.

On to Pahalgam

Transfer through Pampore's saffron fields to Pahalgam, then Betaab Valley in the afternoon. Overnight beside the Lidder, which you can hear from the room.

Aru, Betaab & Chandanwari

The three side valleys, each a different direction out of town. Aru is the quietest and our pick; Chandanwari holds snow into early summer. Local vehicles are mandatory beyond Pahalgam and are included.

On to Gulmarg

Transfer up to Gulmarg and check in for the night. Staying here rather than day-tripping puts you on the first Gondola of the morning, before the buses arrive from Srinagar.
